Pacific Bazas

We were sitting on the deck this afternoon when these two turned up. They were being mobbed by the local Noisy Miner population, who are all raising chicks and are not keen on sharing the neighbourhood with a couple of hungry raptors.

Living in the forest canopy is magical.

Moorhen Chick

image

We were so focused on the coot chicks yesterday we completely missed the moorhens.

The coots (Fulica atra) care for their chicks as a pair and actively chase any other birds – including other coots – away. The moorhens (Galinula tenebrosa) are communal parents. The adults all respond to the incessant fieping noise.

We’ve been watching these nest for the last four weeks. The chicks can’t be more than a couple of days old.

Weapons away

FA/18E beating up the South Bank. I’m wondering what threat could emerge in the city that would make a pair of fourth-generation warplanes seem like a reasonable response.

Several military helos were thwapping about over the CBD this afternoon. Probably G20-related nonsense.

This Apache was addressing the clear danger presented by the thespians and ballerinas at QPAC.
